Abstract

A REVIEW OF WORK DONE ON FLOATING DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEM CONTAINING NIFEDIPINE

Megha N. Karemore* and Jasmine G. Avari

ABSTRACT

Oral route is the most preferable route of administration but it has certain limitation for those drugs which absorb from upper part of GI tract or having narrow absorption window. In the recent years, various technological and scientific attempts have been devoted to the research and development of rate controlled drug delivery systems to overcome physiological adversities such as short gastric residence times and unpredictable gastric emptying times using gastro retentive drug delivery systems. Several approaches are currently being used to prolong the gastric residence time (GRT), including floating drug delivery systems (FDDS), also known as hydrodynamically balanced systems (HBS), swelling and expanding systems, polymeric bioadhesive systems, high-density systems, modified shape systems and other delayed gastric emptying devices. Floating dosage forms are emerging as a promising dosage forms having several advantages over the conventional drug delivery systems. These advantages of floating system can be used in formulation of FDDS of Nifedipine; a calcium channel blocker of the dihydropyridine type having short elimination half-life of 2-4 hrs. The purpose of this review paper is to compile the recent literature and current technologies used in the development of floating drug delivery system as well as summarize evaluation method and applications of various floating dosage forms of Nifedipine.

Keywords: Controlled drug delivery system, gastric residence time, floating drug delivery system, hydrodynamically balanced systems, Nifedipine.
