ABSTRACT
With the increase of the life expectancy of the brazilian population and developed countries the elderly have become susceptible to developing pathologies such as cancer, due to the exposure to environmental chemical agents, genetic predisposition, the age, sex, race and also to those responsible for cell mutations, or by cell dysfunction. Whatever the cause, this is a cellular disorder characterized by a deviation from the normal cell mechanisms. This deviation leads to the increase of the use of anticancer drugs, which currently still have low selectivity for tumor cells, offering serious and harmful adverse reactions to patients. Thus, the pharmaceutical interventions appear to be necessary to assist the patient in the process of treatment. Therefore, this literature review has the aim to educate and inform pharmacists about the importance of their role in promoting patients' quality of life when performing this
modern and desired profession. It is noteworthy that the RDC 220/2004 provides for the insertion of oncology pharmacist in the Multidisciplinary and Interdisciplinary Team of this service. The pharmacist's role is to make direct contact with the prescriber, with other health professionals and the main part of the treatment, the patient. The communication between pharmacist/patient is an essential tool in the work of professional and also in the health promotion as it contributes to the rational use of drugs and the success of pharmacotherapy, optimizing individual drug therapy. In fact, the professional will be a facilitator between the patient and the correct use of drugs. The cancer, considered a multifactorial disease, requires care of several professionals who have a fundamental concern about the preservation of the patient's quality of life and the reduction of unnecessary expenses to the hospital. The pharmacist's work will ensure this quality and safety in all stages of chemotherapy, from the evaluation of the prescription, dispensing, handling, recording of adverse reactions to the appropriate guidance on the correct use of medicines, thus avoiding any medication errors - what justifies the interest in the study.
