ABSTRACT
Objective: The objective of this research article is to evaluate the antifungal efficacy of the various herbal intracanal medicaments due to its biological property and very few studies have been done in this direction to establish its use in day to day practice. Materials and Methods: 30 single-rooted extracted teeth were collected for the study. The samples were treated with Candida albicans suspension at 37 deg C overnight. These infected teeth samples were divided in three groups. Each group consists of 10 samples. First group was subjected to
calcium hydroxide which was the control group and the second and third groups of samples were subjected to Morinda citrifolia (noni) and aloe vera (test groups) respectively. These processed samples with different medicaments were incubated at 37ºC overnight.10μl of every sample suspensions were individually plated on HiChrom Candida differential agar (HiMedia, Mumbai) for enumerating the number of Candida species. Results: When we compared the load of C. albicans in both the cases, we have observed a little reduction in the growth after the medicaments. Of which, Aloe vera as a natural product had inhibited the growth rate up to 12,500 CFU/ml. whereas, other medicaments such as calcium hydroxide and noni were found to have CFU of 19,800 and 15,500 CFU/ml respectively. Conclusion: Aloe Vera has shown better results in the inhibition of candidal load when compared to the other two medicaments (Noni and Calcium hydroxide).
