ABSTRACT
wound healing is common complication of diabetes. The hyperglycemic state and the poor blood supply in diabetic patients interrupts appropriate wound healing and may lead to microbial infection and gangrene formation. Purslane possesses mucilaginous substances which known for their antioxidant, antimicrobial and increasing the tensile strength of the skin. present study has design with the objective, to investigate whether the ethanolic extract of Purslane would accelerate the impaired wound healing in diabetic rats. Also, to assess its impact on liver function in induced diabetic rats. Diabetes was induced in 3groups of rats by administration of STZ-nictonamide (60,140 mg/Kg b.w) respectively. Topical treatment with (40 mg/250 mm2 wound) Purslaneextract was applied for treatment of 250 mm2 full thickness open excision wound 3 times weekly for 21days. Rats were scarified, blood and tissue samples were taken for analysis. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), Total antioxidant capacity, fibrinogen, protein S, protein C as well as histopathology have been analyzed. The levels of VEGF, Total antioxidant capacity, fibrinogen, protein S and protein C in purslane group significantly exceeded those of the other groups. Also, tissue regeneration effect by formation of granulation tissue with organization in wound skin of Purslane group compared with positive diabetic control group. Furthermore Portulaca Oleracea ethanolic extract has a protective effect against the oxidative stress of STZ on liver functions. Conclusions: the Purslane ethanolic extract plays an important role on accelerating diabetic wound healing and suppress the oxidative stress of STZ.
