ABSTRACT
Since antiquity plants have been used as a source of therapeutic agents and are playing an important role in the indigenous system of medicine to fight against diseases. Calotropis gigantea (C. gigantea) of family Asclepiadaceae, is reported to possess antipyretic, analgesic, anticonvulsant, anxiolytic, sedative, wound healing, antidiabetic properties. This study aimed to investigate the chemicals present in the ethanol and water extracts of C. gigantea latex. The present study also carried out to evaluate the antimitotic potential of ethanol (EECGL) and water (WECGL) extracts Calotropis gigantea Linn. latex in Allium cepa root tip cells and its in-vitro cytotoxicity against Sarcoma -180 cells. In the phytochemical investigation of the plant, steroids, triterpenes, alkaloids, saponins and There will be a space between
flavonoids and were found in the latex extracts. C.gigantea latex extracts were found to be antimitotic in Allium cepa root tip cells at the concentration of 100mg/ml. It is evident from the study that Calotropis gigantea latex possessed majority of phytochemical classes of compounds. These findings also reveal that Calotropis gigantea latex possesses pronounced antimitotic potential in Allium cepa root and in-vitro cytotoxic potential against Sarcoma -180 cells.
