ABSTRACT
Objective: The aim of the study was to measure the prevalence of sleep disturbances, improvement of sleep quality with sleep hygiene tips and assessment of (quality of life) QoL among hemodialysis (HD) patients. Materials and methods: This was a prospective study carried out in Nephrology department (Dialysis unit) with the enrollment of 70 patients who had completed at least 3 months of HD. The quality of sleep was measured using (Pittsburgh sleep quality index) PSQI while QoL of the patients was measured using WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire. Results: Among this 70 patients, 45(64.3%) were males and 25 (35.7%) were females. Out of which 51 (72.9%) patients were poor sleepers and 19 (27.1%) patients were good sleepers according to
PSQI questionnaire. The results showed that there is a significant association between age and co morbidity with sleep quality. Finally, patients were provided with sleep hygiene tips and considerable differences in the PSQI scores were observed. This shows that sleep hygiene may be beneficial to such patients. While relating the sleep quality and quality of life it was proved that good sleepers had a better quality of life than poor sleepers. Conclusion: It was concluded that quality of sleep can be improved by sleep hygiene programs. It also enhances the QoL in dialysis patients.
