ABSTRACT
Halophytes or salt tolerant plants are able to grow in extremely saline habitats and tolerate salinity by various eco-physiological mechanisms. This study focus on screening the plant for Phytoconstituents, Anti oxidant activity, Antimicrobial activity and Haemolytic Assay on Suaeda maritima and Suaeda monoica a natural halophyte. Preliminary phytochemical tests (primary and secondary metabolites) of Suaeda maritima and Suaeda monoica were done by using Methanol and Petroleum ether. The phytochemical analysis indicates the presence of alkaloids, terpenoids, steroids, tannins, quinones, saponins, flavonoids and phenols. The FT - IR spectrum confirmed the presence of Aliphatic amines, Alkyl halides, Alcohols, Carboxylic acids, Nitro compounds, Aromatics, Primary amines, Alkynes, Alkanes, Alcohols, Phenols. The plant extracts of Suaeda maritima and Suaeda monoica
showed antimicrobial activity against all clinical pathogens. The Methanolic extract of Suaeda monoica shows 128 HU (Haemolytic Unit)/ mg with chicken erythrocytes, where activity is less in Suaeda maritima 32HU/mg.
Keywords: Suaeda monoica, Suaeda maritima, FT – IR, Antimicrobial activity, Haemolytic.
