FORGOTTEN FLORA OF THE PUNJAB SHIVALIKS: ORCHIDS

ABSTRACT
The Shivaliks, also known as Himalayan foot hills, represents an important zone where floristic components of the Himalayan hills meet with those of the low lying plains. Present communication deals with orchids of the Punjab Shivaliks. Seven orchid species belonging to five genera of two subfamilies (Orchidoideae, Epidendroideae) are met here. Four of these (Epipactis veratrifolia, Eulophia graminea, Pachystoma pubescens, Spiranthes sinensis) are well distributed in Himachal and Uttarakhand hills (even >1000 m) but the remaining three (Eulophia dabia, Zeuxine membranacea, Z. strateumatica) exhibit only a low altitude distribution (
