Dr. Nitin Junejaand Dr. Simran Jot Kaur*

ABSTRACT

Osteoporosis is produced when the total bone mass diminishes, leaving the bone brittle and fragile. The condition is particularly common in elderly people and more frequent in postmenopausal women. It is estimated that over 200 million people worldwide have osteoporosis; 25 million Indians may be affected. The prevalence of osteoporosis increases with age for all sites; by W.H.O up to 70% of women over the age of 80 years have osteoporosis. From an Ayurvedic perspective, Osteoporosis is an aggravated Vata condition, with the bone becoming porous due to an excess of air and ether a decrease in earth. Poor sunlight exposures, skin pigmentation and Vitamin D deficient diet are some obvious causes of osteoporosis .Healthy lifestyle can have a major positive impact on the bone metabolism and bone health. The maintenance of healthy bones is an important factor in extending a person’s healthy life span. Management to these factors focuses on balanced diet, nutrition, adequate calcium and vitamin D, simple activities like walking and stair climbing, smoking cessation, avoidance of excessive alcohol intake and prevention from fall. Supplementation should be used in some cases. Attention has taken to eradicate positive agents of Osteoporosis.
