ABSTRACT
Gastric emptying is a complex process and makes in vivo performance of the drug delivery systems uncertain. In order to avoid this variability, efforts have been made to increase the retention time of the drug-delivery systems for more than 12hours. The floating or hydrodynamically controlled drug delivery systems are useful in such application. Floating drug delivery system enable prolonged and continuous input of the drug to the upper part of the gastro retentional tract and improve the bioavailability of medication that is characterized by a narrow absorption window. This review summarizes advantages, disadvantages, approaches, formulation and applications of floating systems.
Keywords: Floating drug delivery system, hydrodynamically balanced system, effervescent, non-effervescent.
