ABSTRACT
Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate Health Related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients undergoing treatment with Oral hypoglycemic agents (OHA) and Insulin in a tertiary care teaching hospital. Materials and Methods: A prospective study was conducted and Quality of life(QoL)was measured using Short Form -36 Questionnaire. Patients were divided into two groupsas OHAand Insulin group. Both the groups received diabetes education, instructions on lifestyle modifications, dietary regulations. The data was recorded, analyzed and compared to find the QoL in two groups of patients before and after diabeticeducation. Level of significance
among different groups was compared with Analysis of variance. Results: Thirty-nine of 85 (45%) treated with OHA, twenty-five of 85 (29%) treated with Insulinand Eighteen of 85 (21%) treated with both. The SF 36 scores for type 2 diabetic individuals OHA patients consistently had higher scores than Insulin treated patients Compared with OHA, Both OHA and insulin on the physical- and mental-functioning scores. Assessment of SF 36 scores showed that there was statistically significant improvement in the QoL scores of patients at each follow up (p< 0.05) compared to baseline. Conclusions: The results provide evidence that OHA, Both OHA and insulin treated patients have equivalent HRQoL scores in several domains, then only Insulin treated patients. Clinical pharmacist mediated counseling to type 2 diabetes patients significantly improved the QoL of patients. The data suggests that hospital based pharmacist’s counseling can play an important role in the multi-disciplinary healthcare team.
