ABSTRACT

The present research work gave an emphasis to develop topical microemulsion formulation of Artemisia pallens based oil (Davana oil). An Artemisia pallens oil based microemulsion formulation with tween 80 as surfactant and transcutol P as co-surfactant was developed for topical delivery. A variety of oil in water microemulsions were prepared using blend of surfactants which having high and low hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) such as tween 80, transcutol P., etc and immiscible phases of Artemisia pallens based oil (Davana oil) and water. A single isotropic region, which was considered to be a bicontinuous microemulsion, was found in the pseudo ternary phase diagrams developed at various tween 80: transcutol P: davana oil ratios. With the increase of tween 80 concentration, the solubilization capacity of davana oil into the microemulsion system was also increased leading for enhancement in microemulsion region. However, transcutol P associated for enrichment in microemulsion region by filling the remaining lacunaes. The microemulsion was prepared by admixing appropriate quantities of various components with stirring by propeller mixer to ensure thorough mixing. Optimized formulation was prepared using Artemisia pallens based oil (Davana oil) (15% w/v), tween 80 (15% w/v), transcutol P (5% w/v), and water (65% w/v). The stable optimized microemulsion was further evaluated for different characterization studies like as particle size, zeta potential, viscosity, refractive index, conductance and accelerated stability studies etc. The influence of temperature variation, centrifugal force and ionic concentration on the ground of physical attributes of the microemulsions also added value through the point of physical stability.

Keywords: Davana oil, pseudo ternary, surfactants, topical, microemulsion.
