ABSTRACT
Prosopisjuliflora (Leguminosaceae) is a shrub which is traditionally
used to treat, colds, diarrhea, dysentery, inflammation, itching,
measles, sore throat, and wounds. The plant also possesses antiemetic,
antibacterial, expectorant and antisepticactivities. In lieu of the same,
the present study was designed tophytochemically screen and evaluate
the anti-inflammatory potency of the ethanolicextract of leaves of
Prosopisjuliflora(100, 200, and 400 mg/kg)againstcarrageenan induced
paw edema in rats. The preliminary phytochemical screening revealed
the presence of flavonoids, saponins, carbohydrates, cardiac
glycosides, tannins, and alkaloids in ethanolic extract of the leaves of
Prosopisjuliflora. The oral median lethal dose was found to be 3807.9
mg/kg in mice and > 5000 mg/kg in rats. Our result depicted that the
extract significantly attenuated the pawedema with the highest activity
observed at dose of 400 mg/kg. This study supports the folkloric claim of the use of
Prosopisjuliflorain the management of inflammations.
