STROKE ASSOCIATED RISK FACTORS AND THEIR INCIDENCE IN PATIENTS ADMIITED TO TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL

ABSTRACT
Background: Stroke is a neurological manifestation, also known as Cerebrovascular Disease or Cerebrovascular Attack. Stroke is manifested by various symptoms such as loss of brain or cerebral functioning for 24 hours or more which are vascular in origin. Stroke is the third leading cause of death after Heart disease and Cancer according to W.H.O. The major risk factors that attribute to Stroke were Tobacco use, Alcohol intake, Unhealthy diet, Physical inactivity, High Blood Pressure, Diabetes Mellitus, and Obesity. Methodology: This is a prospective and observational study conducted among 265 patients presented with the signs and symptoms of Stroke and admitted in a tertiary care hospital in Guntur over a period of 8 months from November 2015 to June 2016. Results: A Total of 265 subjects were
taken into the study. Demographic details of the patients involved in the study were categorized based on Gender, Age, Smoking, Alcoholic, Concomitant Diseases, and Types of Stroke. In this study, the Mean age of Patient’s was found to be 57.54 years with a Standard deviation of 11.52 years, Male gender was the first leading cause or risk factor associated with Stroke (72.45%). Hypertension (57.35%) was the second, Diabetes mellitus (41.13%) was the third, and Smoking (40%) was the fourth leading cause for Stroke.Conclusion: The two non-modifiable Risk factors: Hypertension (57.35%) and Diabetes mellitus (41.13%) increases the chances of Stroke. Thus, Smoking cessation, management of disease with regular medication along with physical activity is required to prevent the development of Stroke.
