ABSTRACT
Medicinal plants are the potential source of various bioactive compounds. But most of them are not scientifically evaluated. The scientific evaluation and standardization of a developed crude drug is essential for their commercial application. Celastrus paniculatus Willd. belonging to the family Celastraceae, is an endangered medicinal plant in India, mainly used to cure a variety of diseases. The present investigation is mainly focused on the development of a rapid shoot multiplication protocol for the large scale propagation of this plant species. For this MS medium supplemented with varying combinations of BAP (0.5-2.0 mg/l), NAA and Kin (0.1- 0.4 mg/l)were applied. After that the HPTLC profiling of 8th month old field grown tissue culture raised plants after 20, 40 and 60 days of culture period with different levels of hormonal treatment that of their mother plant. The developed HPTLC profile revealed that there is no significant variation in any of the parameters under study, which includes number of peaks and their corresponding Rf values of the different phytochemicals were compared with that of their mother plant. These results depicts the true to type nature of the in vitro propagated Celastrus paniculatus.
Keywords: Celastrus paniculatus, Celastraceae, shoot multiplication, HPTLC, qualitative similarity, true to type nature.
