ABSTRACT
Metabolic syndrome is emerging as an important clinical condition worldwide and it is expressed in an individual through the major 5 components which include high blood pressure, increased triglycerides, decreased HDL- cholesterol and increased waist circumference. An individual is said to have MetS if he/she has at least three or more than three of the above mentioned components. MetS, as such, do not have any specific treatment strategy, but treating the underlying abnormal components and making them normal can greatly help reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with MetS. Objective: The main objective was to implement pharmaceutical care programme in MetS and to monitor drug therapy and related problems, thereby helping patients to improve their medication adherence
through proper education. Methods: A hospital based prospective study, including enrolment of 100 patients presenting MetS. Results: Out of 100 patients studied, 44 were males and 56 were females. MetS was observed to be more frequent in the age group 41-60. 85% were highly adherent to the medication provided. In 24 patients who came for review, from baseline to follow up a statistically significant difference was observed in Systolic BP, Fasting Blood Sugar and medication adherence. Conclusion: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was high in females while the heart risk was high in males. Most of the patients were adherent to medication and in those who came for review, there was significant improvement observed in the systolic BP and FBS.A good physician-pharmacist collaboration is necessary in order to provide proper education and improve the quality of life of the patients.
