ABSTRACT
Fungi are known as important source of natural products. They areprolific producers of secondary metabolites. This research wasundertaken to evaluate the antimicrobial and cytotoxic activity of ethylacetate extracts of Penicillium islandicum and Aspergillus tamariiextracellular secondary metabolites. In this study, Fungi wereinoculated in potato dextrose broth medium then filtrates of both fungiwere extracted with ethyl acetate 1:1(v/v) and evaporated to obtain thecrude extract. The extract of each fungus was evaluated for itsantimicrobial activity against some fungi in comparison toAmphotericin B and bacteria (gram-positive and gram-negative) incomparison to Ampicillin and Gentamicin, respectively using diffusion agar technique. Also, anticancer activity towards hepatocellular liver carcinoma (HepG2) cell line was estimated. The results exhibited a strong anti-bacterial activity of both extracts and higher cytotoxiceffect on HepG2 cell line of Aspergillus tamarii extract than Penicillium islandicum. GC-MSanalysis of both extracts proved the presence of two major compounds in Aspergillus tamariiare 1,2-Benzenedicarboxylic acid, mono(2-ethylhexyl) ester at Rt 31.33 (21.02%) and 1,2-Benzenedicarboxylic acid, bis(2-methylpropyl) ester at Rt 19.76 (9.63%) and the majorcompound in Penicillium islandicum is 1,2-Benzenedicarboxylic acid, mono(2-ethylhexyl) ester at Rt 31.39 (63.15%). These results revealed that both fungal extracts could be used in pharmaceutical industry as drugs for some infectious diseases and hepatocellular carcinoma.
