ABSTRACT
Natural products remain an important source of new drugs, new drug leads and new chemical entities. Herbal medicines in treatment of diseases as complementary and alternative therapy are accepted increasingly with growing scientific evidences of biomedical research and clinical trials. Andrographis paniculata (Acanthaceae), commonly known as Kalmegh, found in plains of India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and West Indies. About 26 different poly herbal formulations of this plant are mentioned in Ayurveda as popular remedy for the treatment of various liver disorders, jaundice, colic dysentery, dyspepsia,
antihelminthic, antiplasmoidal, asthma, bronchitis, hepatitis and many more inflammatory disorders. With all these bioactive properties, an attempt to identify, isolate and characterise the bioactive phytoconstituent andrographolide from the leaf extract was made and spectroscopic studies confirmed its identification and structure.
Keywords: Andrographis paniculata, Andrographolide, characterisation, NMR, FTIR, Mass.
