ABSTRACT
The present study was intended to screen phytochemical screening, antimicrobial, antioxidant and anticancer activities of the acetone, chloroform, ethyl acetate, hexane and methanol crude extracts of Cardiospermum helicacabum leaves and GC-MS analysis of ethyl acetate extract were studied in this work. The preliminary screening of the various extracts revealed the presence of tannins, phenol, saponin, alkaloids, cardiac glycosides and terpenoids. The antimicrobial screening was carried out using the following organisms; Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter aerogenes, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Candida glabrata, Ashbya gossyppi, Rhizomucor meihei, Candida tropicalis, Aspergillus fumigatus. The free radical scavenging capacity using reducing power
method was determined to evaluate the antioxidant activities of the extracts. Anticancer activity was carried out by cell titer luminescent assay kit. GC-MS analysis was performed by Agilent 6890 series GCMS coupled with DB-5 capiilary column. Phtyochemical analysis of aqueous extract showed that the presence of tannins, phenols, saponins, alkaloid, cardiac glycosides, terpenoids. Ethyl acetate extract showed highest antibacterial activity against Klebsiella pneumoniae and highest antifungal activity against Aspergillus fumigates. Methanol extract show highest antioxidant activity compared to other extracts and also this extract show potent anticancer activity in liver lobular cell line. Trough GC-MS analysis six compounds were separated among that 3- hexenyl (t-butyl) calycosin show high abundance in ethyl acetate extract. The results obtained showed that Cardiospermum helicacabum leaf extracts have interesting pharmacological active compounds with great radical scavenging and antimicrobial effects and as such could be used in ethno medicine for treatment of some infections and ailments.
