ABSTRACT
Weaning imposes tremendous stress on piglets and is accompanied by marked changes in gastrointestinal physiology, microbiology and immunology and thus their susceptibility to viral and bacterial infections. Drugs and live vaccines are the control measures used recently in the poultry and livestock farms. However, producers are faced with expensive vaccines and use of drugs for long periods; hence necessity for cheap and safe alternatives rises up. Vaccines are not accepted due to the high cost and not covering all pathogenic species. One of the ways that has been very much accepted nowadays is to use herbal compounds and their active ingredients to treat the disease. The present study was thus carried out to investigate the anti-diarrhoeal
activities on livestock body weight gain, mortality and FCR to evaluating the traditional folklore medicinal use of Diareena. From the results of this study it can be concluded that polyherbal anti-diarrhoeal and gut function modulator Diareena is efficacious in prevention of post weaning diarrhoea in piglets along with improvement in general body condition and body weight gain in during high stress in post weaning period in piglets.
