ABSTRACT
Background: Acute myocardial infarction is one of the clinical conditions that associated with a considerable inflammatory changes and the subsequent acute-phase responses. Most important changes include elevation of certain coagulation factors levels and an increase in platelet count. Objectives: This study was focused on the evaluation of certain hemostatic factors: Factor VIII activity, platelet count and plasma fibrinogen in patients with acute myocardial infarction. Methods: Fifty patients from Baghdad city with acute myocardial infarction were included. Fifty healthy subjects, as a comparative group were included. Both groups were investigated for Factor VIII:c, plasma fibrinogen level and platelet count. Tests were done in Central
Public Health Laboratories in Baghdad. Results: Factor VIII:c was found to be significantly higher (P value : 0. 001) in patients with AMI than in control subjects. Plasma fibrinogen level was significantly higher (P value: 0. 001) in patients with AMI than in control subjects. Platelet count was significantly higher (P value: 0. 001) in patients with AMI than in control subjects. Conclusion: The study revealed a significant elevation in FVIII:c , plasma fibrinogen level and platelet count in patients with AMI.
Keywords: AMI, FVIII:c, Fibrinogen, Platelet.
