ABSTRACT
Objective: In case control study, we aim at presenting study is to determine the value of ultra sound in renal failure (ARF, ARF progress to CRF at this period of study) and to compare the result with those of other studies.Setting: The study was conducted from AL-Jumhoori Teaching Hospital and Ibn-Sena Teaching Hospital from January 2010- January 2011, as prospective study ultrasound of renal was performed for all patients have impaired renal function test.Subject: Two thousand patients were analyzed by ultra sound. Results: During the analyses of this case control study of the renal failure in Mosul City center we found the following. Renal failure was found in (16.5 %) of these cases as (4%) of Acute Renal Failure (ARF) and (12.5%) of Chronic Renal Failure (CRF). Sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, + PV of ultrasound are estimated for detect obstructive cause of renal failure, and for detection of renal failure, also in this study of which compare the Number, (percentage) of patients between different age group, causes of renal failure have a high percentage in non-obstructive cases in compare obstructive cases, symptom of renal failure has a high percentage with gastrointestinal symptom, different causes of renal failure show a high percentage in hyper tension cause in ARF, while the high percentage of hypertension and diabetic mellitus causes in CRF, all of these cases of different causes of renal failure as (ARF) show the normal renal length, width and cortical thickness, while in all cases of different causes of (CRF) show small size of kidney as (length, width) with thin cortex, excepted in congenital causes of (CRF) as polycystic kidney diseases with increase of renal length and width while become thin cortex. Conclusion: The sensitivity, specificity, accuracy of ultrasound in obstructive cause is (98.93 %, 100%, 99.8%) respectively P-value (0.001). The sensitivity, specificity, accuracy of ultrasound in renal failure (79.39%, 80%, 79.9%) respectively P-value (0.001).
