Saif Talib Jasim*, May Talib Flayyih and Abdullah Abd Kareem Hassan

ABSTRACT

Background: Candidiasis is one of the most common disease of human caused by several species of Candida spp. The ability of Candida albicansto form biofilm and adhere to host tissue is an important factors in its Pathogenesis. The main of biofilm is their resistance to broad –spectrum antifungal drugs. Objective: In the present study the formation of biofilm by Candida spp. from different specimenswas detected. In addition, the minimum biofilm inhibitory concentration for Itraconazole was evaluated. Methods: In total 50 isolates of Candida spp. from different sources were collected. Biofilm was determined by using the 96-well polystyrene tissue culture plates. MIC testing was also performed, usingthe96-well polystyrene tissue culture plates. Result: 50 candida spp. were isolated from different clinical specimens, the results indicated that 100% of Candida spp. had the ability to form biofilm in vitro. It was found that Itraconazole was effective against adhered cells and mature biofilm that formed by C.albicans. Conclusions: Although biofilm formation was detected in all tested isolated, there were differences in the ability to form biofilm. In addition Itraconazole was effective against adhered cells and mature biofilm that formed by C.albicans.
