Abstract

FORMULATION DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF pH DEPENDENT BRIMONIDINE TARTRATE IN-SITU OPHTHALMIC GEL

ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study was to formulate and evaluate the pH dependent in –situ ophthalmic gel of Brimonidine Tartrate.To increase residence time and enhance the bioavailability of drug with therapeutic outcome. In present study Carbopol 934 and Sodium alginate were used as polymers. Carbopol 934 was used as a pH sensitive polymer and Sodium alginate was used as mucoadhesive polymer.32 factorial design was used to prepare 9 different formulations. The prepared formulations were evaluated for pH, clarity, viscosity, drug content, gel strength, bioadhesive strength, in vitro drug release, gelling capacity, Isotonicity test, ocular irritancy test and stability. Formulation F8 containing 0.4% carbopol and 0.6%sodium alginate was selected as optimized formulation. Optimize formulation showed 4.29% drug diffusion upto 8 hrs. The limitation of conventional ophthalmic solution can be overcome by formulating In-Situ ophthalmic formulation which will have better contact and mucoadhesion.
