ABSTRACT
Acanthus ilicifoliusL. (Holly Mangroves) an important mangrove plant
species wasstudied for anti-pulmonary carcinoma. The callus was
raised from the root explants with the help of different growth
regulators. Maximum callus biomass was observed in 3mg/L of 2,4-D.
Shade dried root materials and in vitrocultured root callus were
extracted with 9:1 ratio of chloroform and methanol. Then the
partially purified compounds were subjectedto in vivoanti-pulmonary
carcinoma. Pulmonary carcinoma was induced by benzo(a)pyrene.
After 16 weeks of treatmentthe animals treated with root callus extract
were completely recovered from lung cancer. The significant
resultswere observed fromboth lung and liver tissues. The animals
treated with root callus extract showed better result than the field
grown root extract. The plant Acanthus ilicifoliusdid not show any
toxic effect. In this present study,Acanthus ilicifolius was found to be a
natural preventive source of pulmonary carcinoma.
