ABSTRACT

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It has become a major global health problem mainly in developing countries of Asia and Africa including India, where in patient adherence to TB treatment is less. Due to the challenge of multidrug resistant TB, there is a need for discovery of new anti-TB drugs which are safe, effective and Affordable. Medicinal plants are known to synthesize unique structures which often were found to be the basis of drug discovery in the treatment of many ailments. Hence, the present study is designed to investigate the in vitro activity of different solvent (n-hexane, dichloromethane and methanol, respectively) extracts of Acalypha indica Linn. against M. tuberculosis a drug susceptible H37Rv strain using Micro-plate Alamar Blue Assay (MABA). The results revealed that the n-hexane and dichloromethane extracts showed sensitivity against M. tuberculosis strain at a concentration 25 μg/ml, while methanol extract was sensitive at 50 μg/ml concentration. The activity was dose dependent, with increase in concentration there was increase in activity.

Keywords: Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Acalypha indica, in vitro, MABA, H37Rv.
