Abstract

RECENT ADVANCES IN THE PARTICLE MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGIES AND INHALER DEVICES FOR PULMONARY DRUG DELIVERY

Jessy Shaji* and Mahmood Shaikh

ABSTRACT

This review highlights the recent advancement in the particle engineering and the preparation methods of inhalable particles with respect to the application in the field of pulmonary drug delivery. Pulmonary drug delivery system is a novel approach for targeting drugs directly to the lungs for local and systemic therapeutic effects. This route makes it possible to deposit site-specific drugs at high concentrations within the diseased lungs, thereby reducing the overall dose of a drug to patients which in turn reduces systemic side effects. Besides several merits of Pulmonary drug delivery system, they also possess certain challenges. These challenges in drug delivery to the lungs led to the new technological developments in the field of particle engineering and Inhalation devices with their novel designs and delivery mechanisms. The gaps in clinical and technical aspects have been minimized by pharmaceutical researchers through a better knowledge of complexes and challenges confronting the advancement of Pulmonary drug delivery system.
