ABSTRACT
Most dosage forms contain both active ingredients and excipients. Active ingredient produces pharmacological action in the body and excipients help medication to release more easily in a more effective manner. Granulation is used mainly to improve flow and compressibility of powders and prevents segregation of the blend components. Binders improve flow properties of granules to be prepared. Examples include acacia, mucilage, glucose, povidone and starch mucilage. Disintegrators ensure the granules/tablets break down into its component particles after ingestion. Examples include Sodium alginate, carmellose sodium, microcrystalline cellulose, sodium glycin
carbonate and starch. Glidants are essential for flow of granules and preventing sticking of compressed tablets in die. Examples include Magnesium and calcium stearate, colloidal silica, etc.
