ABSTRACT
Histopathology of the adenohypophysis was observed during
spawning phase, the fish G. giuris on treatment with sub lethal
concentrations of Neem oil (0.05 ppm, 0.25 ppm and 0.5 ppm) for 24,
48, 72 and 96 hrs intervals. The results of the present study showed
morphological changes in the cell structure. The PRL cells showed
decrease in their numbers and size with an increase in the
concentration of neem oil. During 24-96 hrs treatment, PRL cells
showed continuous degranulation and vacuolization in the cytoplasm
with conspicuous intercellular spaces. Prolactin cells in the RPD
showed loosely arranged with less granules and the intercellular spaces
were predominant with a decrease in the mean nuclear diameter. Investigation on
Gonadotrophs – GTH cells showed degranulation and hypertrophy of cells and nuclei after
the fishes were exposed for 24 hrs neem oil on treatment. In higher concentration of neem oil
treatment (0.5 ppm for 24 hrs), the GTH showed various stages of degranulation which were
distributed sparsely. A reduction in the number and diameter of the gonadotrophs indicate
possible reduction in release of gonadotrophs.
Keywords: Neem oil, G.giuris, Prolactin(PRL) and Gonadotrophs (GTH).
