Nidhi Sharma*, Neeru and Dr. Sushil Kumar Dubey

ABSTRACT

It is found that 10 billions of microbes are present in oral cavity; some of them are hazardous to hygiene of buccal cavity. Diseases in oral cavity have been considered as major threat affecting to health. Traditionally herbal tooth powders are used as tooth-cleaning agents, and also used in various oral diseases like gum disease, tooth erosion, tooth sensitivity, toothaches and get rid of teeth from growth of bacterial colonies. Marketed herbal tooth powders contain phytoconstituents like terpenoids, carbohydrates, glycosides, tannins, in majority. In our study four different marketed herbal tooth powders were selected and found difference in colour due to their different composition, with difference in extractive values, foaming index, and swelling index, presence of moisture, flow property and capacity of gallic acid. In-vitro antibacterial and antioxidant activity the alcoholic extract of all marketed tooth powders showed equally potent antibacterial in nature against oral pathogens (Gram positive) and also had good antioxidant capacity may be due to the bioactive compounds like tannins and derivatives of tannins (gallic acid) present in the alcoholic extracts of tooth powders.

Keywords: Marketed herbal tooth powders, Evaluation parameters, Anti-oxidant, Anti-bacterial, Condensed tannin.
