ALTERATION OF SEX HORMONES DUE TO THE ADMINISTRATION OF THREE INDIGENOUS PLANT ROOT EXTRACTS USED BY THE SANTAL TRIBAL PEOPLE OF THE DISTRICT BANKURA, W.B., INDIA, FOR THE CONTROL OF FERTILITY

ABSTRACT
The current study was intended to evaluate the hormonal level especially (FSH, LH, Progesterone and Estrogen) in the female albino mice due to the administration of three indigenous plant root extracts used either singly or in combination. The three types of plants roots e.g., Nishinda – Vitex negundo Linn; Sarpagandha – Rauwolfia serpentina Benth.ex Kurz and Pan – Piper betle Linn were used in this investigation. The medicine men of the Santal tribal people of the District Bankura, West Bengal, India., prepare some medicines from the roots for the control of fertility. To know the feasibility and reliability, the root extracts were prepared and applied at a specific dose on the female albino mice . At the termination of the experiment blood samples were collected, processed for the assay of hormones by
RIA procedure. The results of this study clearly point out that the indigenous medicines can be used for the safe agent for the control of fertility.
