Sakthivigneswari Ganesan and * K.Dharmaraj

ABSTRACT

Mushrooms have increasingly being explored as a valuable source of nutrients’ and highly bioactive secondary metabolites. Ganoderma tsugae is used as an elixir of life to promote health and longevity in East Asian countries. It reported as therapeutic foods that are useful in preventing diseases such as hypertension, hypercholesterolemia and cancer. Ganoderma tsugae was collected in our College Campus during rainy season. Further the powder of Ganoderma tsugae was used by antimicrobial activity was evaluated against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Acetone, ethanol and methanol used as extractive solvents. Maximum antibacterial activity of crude extracts of methanol extracts Ganoderma tsugae (20mm ± 0.577mm) shows high level of antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli. Acetone and ethanol extracts shows good antibacterial activity (17± 0.666mm, 18± 0.577) against Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli respectively. Gram negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae were most susceptible than the gram positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus). The zones of inhibition in both the extracts are less than the methanolic extracts against the pathogens.

Keywords: Ganoderma lucidum, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa,
