ABSTRACT
Dental caries is the most common disease throughout the world; it can affect the overall health of people. S. mutans are the most common bacteria associated with dental caries. Some antimicrobial agents can destroy S. mutans but is can be difficult because its biofilm formation can make it resistant. Natural herbs contain chemical substances which can inhibit biofilm formation. M. alba is used for the treatment of several diseases, but limited information is available about its effectiveness to destroy S. mutans. The purpose of this research was to measure the antimicrobial effectiveness using a minimal inhibition concentration (MIC) assay of the methanol leaf extract of Mours alba on S. mutans. The results showed that M. alba had a MIC of 2.5mg/ 10ml on S. mutans. Therefore, the methanol extract of the leaves of M. alba have a greater antimicrobial effectiveness than a chlorhexidine mouthwash.
