ABSTRACT
Purpose: The aim of the present investigation was to develop suitable formulation for the topical delivery of methanolic extract of Pterocarpus santalinus for its anti-inflammatory action. Methods: Gels were prepared by using Carbopol 934 P as gelling agent. All the prepared gel formulations were evaluated for various properties such as pH, spreadability, extrudability, viscosity, skin irritation and anti-inflammatory effect. All the developed topical gel formulations were free of skin irritation. Anti-inflammatory studies done by carrageenan induced rat paw oedema method in wistar albino rats. Results: Anti-inflammatory effect of all formulation and standard gel formulations were significantly different from control group (P < 0.05) whereas this effect was not significantly different for P. santalinus gels formulations to that of marketed gel (diclofenac gel) formulation (P > 0.05). Formulation with code F2 gel showed better % inhibition of inflammation as compared to other formulation. Conclusions: The topical gel formulations of P. santalinus developed in this study shows remarkable results and could be a viable option for effective and controlled management of inflammation.Novelty of the Work: No work has been reported on anti-inflammatory action of P. santalinus. Results of the findings serves scientific basis to link the concepts given in ancient system with modern system of medicine and formulation could be used as an alternative treatment in treating inflammatory conditions compared to marketed formulations of synthetic drugs.
Keywords: Pterocarpus santalinus, anti-inflammatory, topical gel.
