ABSTRACT
Schiff bases of ethyl-1-cyclopropyl-6,7-difluoro-8-methoxy-1,4-dihydro-4-oxoquinoline-3-carboxylate have been synthesized with different substituted aromatic aldehydes. The reaction of ethyl-1-cyclopropyl-6,7-difluoro-8-methoxy-1,4-dihydro-4-oxoquinoline-3-carboxylate (2) with hydrazine hydrate followed by condensation of (4) with substituted aromatic aldehydes in the presence of glacial acetic acid yielded the Schiff bases. The structures of the title Schiff bases were elucidated on the basis of IR, 1H-NMR, and Mass spectral data. All the synthesized compound were evaluated for their potential as antibacterial and antifungal agents against some Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains.
Keywords: Fluoroquinolone, Schiff base, Hydrazine hydrate, Substituted aryl aldehyde, Antibacterial.
