ABSTRACT
Variation among different germplasm has basic requirements for plant breeders to search new plant variety. Electrophoretic patterns of protein fractions are directly related to the genetic background of the cultivars and can be used to certify the genetic makeup. SDS-PAGE is a useful technique to identify the difference protein banding pattern among different germplasm. On the basis of seed storage proteins as seed storage proteins are largely independent of environmental fluctuations; their profiling using SDS-PAGE technology is particularly considered as a consistent tool for characterization of
germplasm. In this study we attempted to characterize the three accessions of chickpea and four accessions of mung bean for their total seed storage protein profiling using SDS-PAGE to ascertain the genetic variation among intra specific cultivars. A considerable variation in protein banding was observed to various cultivars. Among chickpea accessions there is less variation in the banding pattern while considerable variation was observed in the mung bean.
