ABSTRACT

Aims: The present study was aimed to evaluate the methanolic fruit extract of Momordica cymbalaria (MFMC) for its insulin sensitizing activity using 3T3 L1 murine adipocyte cell line in vitro. Methods: Considering the prominent role of adiponectin and leptin in insulin resistance, the effect of MFMC is evaluated for its effect on adiponectin and leptin gene expression in 3T3 L1 murine adipocyte cell line in vitro, rosiglitazone (50 μg/ml) was used as a reference standard. Results: In the results, the MFMC showed significant and dose dependent elevation of adiponectin (125 g/ml - P < 0.05, 250 g/ml- P < 0.01 and 500 g/ml - P < 0.001) and leptin (125 g/ml – P < 0.05, 250 g/ml- P < 0.01 and 500 g/ml - P < 0.001) gene expressions compare to control. In addition, the reference standard rosiglitazone showed significant increase in adiponectin (P < 0.001) and leptin (P < 0.001) gene expressions compare to control. Conclusion: These findings suggest that MFMC alleviates insulin resistance in 3T3 Ll murine adipocyte cell line in in vitro.
