PREVALENCE OF DYSMENORRHOEA, IT’S PSYCHOLOGICAL AND NON-PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS AMONG COLLEGE STUDENTS

ABSTRACT
Most females exhibit some degree of pain and distress during menstrual period, which can impact ontheir daily activities, and upset their efficiency and comfortless at home or at their workplace. In our country many girls may be short ofproper and adequate information regarding dysmenorrhea and menstrual hygiene, causing inaccurate unhealthybehavior throughout their menstrual periods. This study was prepared for the adolescent girls to evaluate the prevalence &pattern of dysmenorrhea and to observe the menstrual hygiene practice among students in a technical graduate College to improve their QOL.A prospective interventional study was conducted in an educational Institution for a period of 06 months. The study group included 232
female students. The data was collected by general assessment form, questionnaires regarding menstrual characteristics and dysmenorrhea, Wang baker scale for assessment of dysmenorrhea severity. Percentages and Chi-square test was used for statistical analyses. Prevalence, psychological & non-psychological factors of dysmenorrheawas calculated. According to Wangbac ker scale, the percentage of pain severity of dysmenorrhea was categorized asless, mild, moderate, severe, very severe pain were 13%, 13%, 21%, 36%& 17% respectively. Toconclude Prevalence of Dysmenorrheawas found to be 81.7% and there was an association between dysmenorrhea and coffee consumption, exercise, breakfast, menstrual bleeding duration days, menstrual cycle irregularity, family history of dysmenorrhea. It can be bettermanaged by mental preparation and by suitable changes in lifestyle like regular physical exercise, taking proper nutritious diet and with assurance to the students. It is important to stretch awareness about the causes and treatment of dysmenorrhea to avoid undue sufferingscausing absenteeism from work and studies.
