ABSTRACT

The present study was to evaluate the in vitro cytotoxic activity of aqueous extract of Chlorococcum humicola and ethylacetate extract of Desmococcus olivaceus on Hep2 cells of human lung cancer. Qualitative phytochemical screening tests were performed to identify the various phytochemicals present in the extract. In this study the algal extracts were tested using human laryngeal carcinoma cell line ( Hep 2) for its effects on cell viability and cell growth inhibition by 3-(4,5-Dimethyl-2- thiazolyl) - 2,5 bi phenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. The results showed decreased cell viability and increased cell growth inhibition in concentration dependant manner and also alters the cell morphology after treatment with the algal extracts. The MTT assay demonstrated that the aqueous extract Of Chlorococcum humicola (AECH), ethyl acetate extract of Desmococcus olivaceus (EEDO) and standard quercetin inhibited the growth of Hep2 cell lines with an IC50 value of 23.43, 62.5 and 9.32 μg/ml respectively. Among the two green micro algae aqueous extract of Chlorococcum humicola possesses the significant cytotoxic activity against human laryngeal carcinoma cell line.

Keywords: Desmococcus olivaceus, Chlorococcum humicola, Hep 2, Human laryngeal carcinoma cell line, IC50, Cytotoxicity, MTT assay.
