ABSTRACT
The increasing interest in powerful biological activity of secondary
metabolites outlined the necessity of determining their contents in
medicinal plants. The present study intended to find out the active
constituents. Caryota urens plant is rarely mentioned in published
books and there is no data of showing which constituents are present in
this plant Qualitative chemical examination of various successive
extracts of leaves of Caryota urens showed presence of Phytosterols,
triterpenoids, flavanoids, tannins and phenolic compounds and
carbohydrates were present. Eluent and isocratic column
chromatography was used for isolation of compounds. Isolation of
terpenoids was done by column chromatographic technique, using different ratio of solvent
from nonpolar to polar i.e., hexane, pet ether, toluene, chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol
as an eluent and two compounds were isolated. These compounds were terpenoids which are
confirmed by liberman burchard’stest, salkowski’s test and TLC with Anisaldehyde in H2SO4
reagent. Spectroscopic data of UV, FT-IR, GC-MS, chemical shift of U.V gave the
probability of monoterpenoids and sesquiterpenoids. Isolation of steroid was done by column
chromatographic technique and that gave probability of steroidal moiety in the isolated
compound. However this requires further LC-MS for the confirmation of compound.
