ABSTRACT Present study was aimed to elucidate antihyperlipidemic effect of Chelidonium majus leaves by high cholesterol diet induced hyperlipidemia and triton induced hyperlipidemia in rats and to investigate the serum lipid levels. Hyperperlipidemia was induced experimentally in rats by including high cholesterol diet by feeding 0.50g% peanut and 0.50 g% coconuts in normal diet for 14 days. In the other method rats were induced triton 10X at a dose of 150 mg/kg. Hyperlipidemic rats were administered fresh ethanolic leave extract at the dose of 100 mg/kg and 120 mg/kg and the standard drug Atorvastatin 10 mg/kg. Blood samples were collected after 24 h of last administration and used for estimation of lipid profile. Serum cholesterol levels were estimated using standard methods. Fresh ethanolic extract at a dose of 100 mg/kg and 120 mg/kg resulted in dose dependent significant decline in total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) and very low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (VLDL-C) levels in hypercholesterolemic rats. Further, in comparison to Atorvastatin 10mg/kg resulted in comparable decrease of TC, LDL-C, TG and VLDL-C levels (p > 0.05administration. Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of flavonoids, triterpenoids, alkaloids, phenolic compounds, tannins and saponins fresh leaves of Chelidonium majus. The results of present study revealed antihyperlipidemic effect of Chelidonium majus in high cholesterol induced diet and triton induced rats.
