ABSTRACT
The aim of this research was to develop and validate a simple, sensitive, accurate and rapid spectrophotometric method for estimation of allopurinol. Allopurinol is a structural analogue of hypoxanthine and acts to inhibit xanthine oxidase for treatment of hyperuricaemia and gout. Allopurinol was estimated at 250 nm and the percentage recovery was found to be 100.4 ± 0.65. The method was tested and validated for various parameters according to the ICH guidelines. The proposed methods were accurate, precise, reproducible and economical for the routine analysis of allopurinol in bulk drug and in formulation. The LOD and LOQ were 0.73 and 2.2μg/ml respectively. The method was applied successfully for the estimation of allopurinol in tablet
dosage form without the interference of common excipients.
