GC-MS DETERMINATION OF BIOACTIVE COMPOUNDS OF PONGAMIA PINNATA (L) PIERRE (FABACEAE)

ABSTRACT
Pongamia pinnata (L) Pierre is one of the important medicinal plants belonging to the family Fabaceae, commonly known as “Pungai” in tamil, traditionally used as natural insecticide against agriculturally important insect pests. The present investigation deals with the GC-MS determination of methanolic extract of the above said plant. Sixteen phytochemical components have been identified by comparing the chromatogram, peak value of unknown compound with entries in NIST data base. n-Hexa decanoic acid, stigmasta-3-ol, 5 chloro-acetate (3, 5), phytol, 4-piperidinamine, N,1-dimethyl and 4-Hydroxy – N – methylpiperidine are the prevailing compounds in the methanol extract of P. pinnata which are suggested to have nematicidal properties. However, isolation of individual phytochemical compound may ensure
to find a novel drug for nematode control.
