ABSTRACT

Bi-layer tablet is suitable for sequential release of two drugs in combination, separate two incompatible substances and also for sustained release tablet in which one layer is immediate release as initial dose and second layer is maintenance dose. Simvastatin is a hypolipidemic drug used to control elevated cholesterol, or hypercholesterolemia. Simvastatin is a member of the statin class of pharmaceuticals, is a synthetic derivate of a fermentation product of Aspergillus terreus. The aim of present study was to prepare simvastatin sustained release bilayer tablet by wet granulation method using hydrophillic and or hydrophobic polymers. Tablet is an important area of research in the field of drug delivery, because they the ability to deliver the wide range of drug for sustained period of time and therefore the dose and frequency of administration would be reduced hence increasing patient complience The formulated uncoated tablet of simvastatin is evaluated successfully within the evaluation parameters which suggest that the tablet have better therapeutic level in systematic circulation.

Keywords: Simvastatin, hydrophilic, hypercholesterolemia.
