ABSTRACT
This study assessed the chemical components of some medicinal plants used in the treatment of common ailments of Somba cattle in Benin. It concerned of eleven plants, namely Bridelia ferrigina, Afzelia africana, Khaya senegalensis, Lanea microcarpa, Pterocarpus erinaceus, Tamarindus indica, Lanea acida , Momordica charantia, Entada africana, Adansonia digitata et Carica papaya, collected within different rangelands of the Northern of Benin. Their crude phytochemical constituents rate, their total phenolic, alkaloid, mucilage, steroids and flavonoid were quantified. Chemical tests were carried out with the specimen’s powder and aqueous extract using standard identification procedures of the constituents. The results revealed the presence of the following components: phenols, alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, mucilage and steroids. The findings provided evidence that crude aqueous extracts of these plants contain medicinally important bioactive constituents.
Keywords: medicinal plants, phenols, tannins, flavonoids, cattle, Benin.
