ABSTRACT
Cycas beddomei is an endemic gymnosperm of Seshachalam Hill region possessing high therapeutic values. Plant parts are reported high quantities of secondary metabolites like phenols, flavonoids and anthocyanidins with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anthelmintic activities supporting the local traditional medicinal applications. Hence the aqueous and methanol leaf extracts are subjected on pyloric ligated ulcer induced albino rats. The results proved effective ulcer protection at 500 mg/kg aqueous leaf extracts with 54.1% and 42.25% with methanol extracts. And also showed the reduction of gastric juice volume, free and total acidity and regulation of pH as that of the standard drug Omeprazole treated rats. Hence the aqueous extracts ofleaf were recommended to isolate the bioactive compounds for the antiulcer drug designing.
Keywords: Ulcer protection, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, gastric juice, omeprazole, total acidity.
