PHENOLIC ANTIOXIDANTS FROM THE ROOTS OF ACACIA CATECHU FROM CENTRAL INDIA
Dr. Rachna Pandey*
ABSTRACT
In search of potential antioxidant(s) from the locally available trees in Jabalpur town of Central India, ethyl acetate extract of root of A. catechu proved to be a good source of peroxide and DPPH scavenging activities. Upon gel filtration of this extract via silica gel G, the pronounced DPPH activity was found in fraction no. 12 to 14. These pooled fractions showed a single yellow band with Rf of 8.7 upon thin layer chromatography developed by DPPH, confirming the presence of antioxidant compound. Upon subsequent LC ESI+ MS, dicaffioshikimic acid (m/z = 497.4) and dicaffioylquinic acid (m/z = 497.4) were identified.
Keywords: Antioxidants, Acacia catechu, DPPH, Phenolic compounds, Caffeic acid derivatives, LCMS.
