EFFICACY OF TERMINALIA BELLIRICA SEED EXTRACT FOR THE CONTROL OF FILARIAL VECTOR, CULEX QUINQUEFASCIATUS SAY
Sakkanan Ilango and Mariappan Malarvizhi
ABSTRACT
The larvicidal activity of seed extract of Terminalia bellirica, on the
larvae of Culex quinquefasciatus was determined, Ethyl acetate
(EtOAc) soluble extract of T. bellirica showed very high larvicidal
activity than (MeOH) Methanol extract. Irrespective of the species of
the mosquitoes tested, at concentrations ranging from 31.21 to 34.95
ppm of the active fraction killed 50% of the treated larvae. Exposure
of the mosquitoes at any stage of their larval development less than
7.03ppm active seed extracts of T. bellirica inhibited 50% of the
treated larvae from emerging as adults. The active extracts also
interfered moulting and metamorphosis, induced malformation,
extended the larval development duration and inhibited an adult
emergence.
Keywords: mosquitoes, larvicidal activity, adult emergence and growth index.
