INSTRUMENTATION OF FTIR AND ITS HERBAL APPLICATIONS

ABSTRACT

FTIR (Fourier Transform Infra-red Spectroscopy) is a sensitive technique in Analytical Chemistry that has proved to be useful in a many different fields ranging from Inorganic Chemistry to Forensics. The mechanism, equipment, theory and applications of FTIR makes it a popular tool in identification and characterization, details of which is included in this article. FTIR is an advanced Technique which can further be utilized in the field of medicine for diagnosis as well as for treating ailments by discovering new drugs. This review focuses on the use of FTIR in analysis of herbal medicines. The ease with which the FTIR works makes it more acceptable to work with, in not only Herbal analysis but also in Environmental studies, Cancer detection, Forensics, Food Analysis and Toxicology. The use of FTIR in various herbal drugs analysis is illustrated in this article for instance.
