ABSTRACT
A simple, rapid and sensitive Spectrophotometric method for the
determination of microgram amounts of Sulfamethoxazole(SMZ) drug
as bluk and in diluted solution is described. The method is based on
the azo-coupling reaction between Sulfamethoxazole and(4-amino-2-
Hydroxy acetophenon )(SDA) to form an intense colored product with
maximum absorption at 424 nm. Beer’s law is obeyed over the
concentration range of( 0.5 – 18) ppm with molar absorptivity of
2.5760 x104 l.mol-1.cm-1 and Sandell`s sensitivity of 0.009 μg.cm-2 . the
detection limit (LOD) was 0.476 μg/ml-1 . LOQ was 0.289 μg/ml-1.
The method does not resort to solvent extraction. The optimum
conditions for all colour development are described and the proposed
method has been successfully applied for the determination of quantities of Sulfamethoxazole
in bulk drug and pharmaceutical Preparations by using initial rate method and fixed time
methed. The common excipients and additives did not interfere in this method.
